JAD Version 1.7.1

INTRODUCTION

JAD has been designed to make it easy for photographers to completely design, preview and order wedding albums, with the added bonus of all the digital files being prepared for printing as well.

Firstly, JAD will not solve all your digital workflow needs, though it goes a long way.
Good digital workflow practises will need to be in place to make JAD an even more efficient tool.

This guide will help to get you started and solve some of the "little mysteries", in easy to read step by step instructions.

JAD is designed to make ordering Jorgensen Albums easier.

For more information on our albums, go to www.jorgensenalbums.com

For up to the date information on JAD, go to www.jadesigner.com

Have fun and if you need help, we are only an email away at jad@jorgensenalbums.com

Regards,

Gary Jorgensen

START HERE!

FILE MANAGEMENT

To begin with, make sure you have backups of all your image files.  This is a MUST .  Do not work with original files.

Next, make a folder to store all the JAD files in.  Perhaps create it on your desk top, or create a special directory on your hard drive where you'll put all your JAD files.  Give each album a unique name or number that you can refer to later.  (Hint: use the couples last name and date of the wedding eg Jones Sept 04).  Within this folder, create some sub folders named:

Images; Preview; Slide Show; Album Order and Prints (you may choose other names)

Short Cut Keys
Because JAD works "across platforms", some of the short cut keys you may be use to aren't available.  Here are some of the short cuts that are:

When importing images, to select multiples, highlight the first one in a row that you require.  Then hold the "Shift" key down and select the last one and all the images in between will highlight.  Select the open key and they all will import.

To select random images, click on the images whilst holding down the "Control" key

- Cut = Ctrl "A"

- Paste = Ctrl "V"

- Copy - Ctrl "C"

Preferences

Before designing your album, under the File>Preferences menu, there are various options you can set up.

Units of Measurement and Thumbnail Sizes
JAD can easily be changed to either mm or inches.  This can even be done to completed albums.  Go to  FILE > PREFERENCES>SELECT MILLIMETRES or INCHES.  JAD then warns that this will not take effect until the programme has been closed and re-opened.

To change thumbnail sizes, select from Small, Medium or Large.  This can be changed later on but it will take time whilst JAD re-sizes the images.

Image Cache Reminder

JAD creates thumbnails of all your imported images in a folder.  Over time, this folder can grow to an enormous size.  To improve performance, we recommed clearing the cache periodically.  Doing this will not affect any of your designs.  It will mean, that when opening an album where the cache has been cleared, JAD will need to re-crerate the thumbnails.

Saving Your Album
It's always a good idea to regularly save your work.  JAD will remind you when you go to close an album or if you are placing an order and haven't already saved the album.  Save it to the folder you created (see above) under Album Order.

In  Preferences there is a section where you can have JAD auto back up at certain nominated times.  We strongly recommend you set this to at least every hour. This is a safety backup and does not replace regular backups to your nominated folder.

OPENING JAD

To open JAD, double click on the icon on your desk top.  You'll notice there is a small delay as JAD goes looking to see if you are hooked up to the internet and if you are, it looks for any new versions or updates to JAD.  If there are, it will automatically download them.

Selecting Album
The screen opens with a blank template.
To begin a new album go to FILE.
Another dialogue box opens with ALBUM AND MATS / ALBUM ONLY / MATS ONLY.  Select ALBUM AND MATS.

First, select ALBUM TYPE.

Next, select PAGE SIZE.  Only sizes that are available for the album type chosen will be displayed.

INITIAL PAGE COUNT.   Insert the number of pages you estimate will be in the album.  You can add or subtract pages later, so it's not important if you get this figure wrong.

Select OK when you're happy with your selection.

Selecting Album Colours
A new screen now opens where you select album colours etc.  It defaults to the "Cover" Tab.

"Cover" Tab

Below this tab are the selections for COVER MATERIAL.   Select one of the options (only the options available for the album type shown will be revealed).  Select colour.

BINDING MATERIAL.  This ONLY applies to Quarter Bound Photo Cover, Metal Laminate or Wood covers where you can choose among different materials/colours for the spine.

COVER CORNER PROTECTORS are the metal corners available on most covers (not for Metal or Wood albums).

"Page" Tab
This is where the Page and Mat colours are selected.

PAGE PROPERTIES.  "Base Page Colour" only applies to Art, E and S Albums.
"Page Corners" only applies to Pro Bound and Styla Albums.  "Page Edging" only applies to Pro Bound Albums and Styla Albums.

MAT PROPERTIES.  Only colours available for album type will display.

PHOTO BORDERS.  These will be explained in detail further on but basically they are imbedded into the photo file.  You can also add a border to individual images.

"General" Tab
This is summary of the album style and sizes you have selected.

"User" Tab

Fill in your studio name etc.  This should only need to be done once, as JAD will keep this information.
Choose from a list of distributors in your area.
NOTE:  All albums are made in Australia and shipped to the individual distributors for onward distribution.

"Order" Tab

ORDER DETAILS.  Once the  order has been sent, a receipt number will be recorded under "Order Confirmation #".  Please use this when contacting Jorgensen Albums for any order enquiries.
In the "Reference", perhaps use the couples last name and date of the wedding.
Under "Special Instructions"  is where you would fill in any special requests for us, such as changed delivery instructions etc.

ALBUM PACKAGING.  This defaults to a Standard Black Box unless a Carry Case (where available) is selected.

"Export"Tab    (see also Exporting Prints)
Probably the most IMPORTANT feature of JAD.  This is where you nominate the size of the final composite image to be exported.  If you choose the "Show Border on Screen" option  (recommended), then a red border will show on each page to show the boundary of the print size you have chosen.  If your page design falls outside of that boundary, no red border will appear.
At that point, you can choose to change the mat design or leave it.  JAD will create two files for the exports.  One for the size chosen e.g. "11x14" and the other named "Didn't Fit" which will contain the page designs that were outside of the chosen size.

Best Fit Option

This is new from JAD 1.7.5 onwards.  This has been created for those photographers who  want to economise on paper used.  JAD creates a bounding border +5mm(1/4") to the extremities of your page design.

More information on this later when we discuss Image Export.

If you are happy with your selections, press OK to go to the next stage.

PLANNING THE ALBUM

Screen Layout                                                                                                                                          You can work with JAD over two screens if you wish.  JAD's default screen is divided up into MAT SELECTION and LEAF VIEW.  LEAF VIEW also contains the three "Viewing" tabs and the "Photo Placement" tab.

Each of these can be undocked and moved to your preferred configuration on one or two screens.

You can save your preferred layout, load an existing saved layout, reset to the default layout or load the original JAD layout by going to VIEW.

For the purpose of this demonstration, I will be using the default screen layout below.

Mat Selection

On the left hand side are all the mats that are available, catergorised into:

  • Standard
  • Comp Cut (Computer Cut Mats)
  • Custom (this will be blank at this stage)
  • Panoramic 2
  • Panoramic 3
  • Panoramic 4
  • Favourites

View Tabs

There are three tabs from which to choose your viewing option.  The fourth tab, "Photo Placement" is to view the current image.

"Leaf View" Tab

This is the default opening page and show a double leaf opening (or three or four if flip pages are added).

"Album View" Tab

This is where the album will be planned.  The first image in the top left hand corner, is that of the album cover you have chosen.

"Page View" Tab

This is where the current page you are working on is displayed.  You can toggle between pages by clicking on the page in the "Album View".

"Photo Placement" Tab

This is where the current image being worked on is displayed.  To the right of the image are the zoom and re-sizing tools.

"Add Images" Tab

In the bottom right hand corner is the Add Images Tab.

"General" Tab

This is where the images will load to.  You can add new categories by going to the tool bar at the top of the screen and choosing IMAGE > ADD IMAGE CATEGORY .

eg home; church; gardens; reception

Tool Bar

Across the top of the screen is the main tool bar  File; Album; Page etc.  We will discuss these in more detail as we go along.

LOADING PHOTOS

In order to place photos into an album they must first be imported into the PHOTO PREVIEW section.  Once the album is saved, these photos will be saved in the album. To add a photo, simply press the ADD IMAGES tab, then select the image file(s) to import.

When photos are imported for the first time, they may take a while. This time is taken caching information about the image in order to make JAD run faster. Images may take up to 5 seconds each to import depending on their size. It can be a good idea to set up the photo import and have a quick break while it is busy - you will only need to do this once for each new set of photos.

Categories

Photos may be organised into categories within an album. To create a new category select IMAGE > ADD IMAGE CATEGORY or right mouse click over the space below the GENERAL tab. Photos may be moved to another category by dragging the thumbnail onto the Tab of the new category. (Shortcut: right click mouse button or MAC - Apple Key+Click).

HINT:  It's a good idea to only add those images that you think will be used in the album.  If these have already been chosen, then add them to the JAD folder, "images", you first created.  The first time you download these to JAD, it will take a few minutes while they are cached.  Next time you open this album, it will load quickly.

SELECTING MATS

Adding mats to your design is the next step.  Beginning with side one,  drag a mat from the MAT SELECTOR on the left from either of the categories onto a page side.

Selecting Images

Select an image to go into one of the openings on side one (you can only drag one image in at a time).  The image from the selection below, will now have a red line though it to let you know it has been used.
NOTE:  you can still use the image again.

Continue the same process, side by side, image by image.

Custom Designing Mats

One of JAD's strengths, is the ability to custom design almost any mat you need.  You can even alter existing standard or computer cut mats and then save them to your "Favourites" for use later on.

No more trying to guess what fits on a page, or paying for custom cutting or file saving fees!

To Create a New Custom Mat

Go to the toolbar and select MAT > CREATE NEW CUSTOM MAT .  The Custom Mat Editor will open.

Firstly, the SHOW GRID and SNAP TO GRID command can be turned on or off.

To create a new rectangle or square shape, click on one of the appropriate shape buttons and then move the mouse pointer into the white square to the right.  Once in the white square, the mouse pointer will turn to cross hairs.

On the right hand side, under SIZE, you can enter a precise size in the HEIGHT and WIDTH.  (NOTE: this is the size of the aperture, not the photo).

HINT:  After you have entered in a measurement or angle, it is important to hit the "Enter" key after you have typed in the number for it to register.

You can then drag the shape where you need it.  To add more rectangles or squares, follow the same steps.

To create a rotated shape, choose the rotated rectangle shape button.  A small square dot appears in the body of the shape once you select it.  Run your mouse over the dot and you'll  find that you can rotate the shape left or right.  To be more precise, you can insert the angle under SIZE to the right.

For a polygon shape, click the polygon shape button, and then move your mouse over the white drawing space.

Click once, and then move the mouse to a new position.  When you have made the line the right length, click again to end the line and then move the mouse again and so on.  JAD will auto finish the shape if you double click at the end.

Nodes are the beginning and end points of the lines.  You can add or subtract nodes to alter your shape, by clicking on the appropriate button and then, using your mouse, click on the point of the shape at which you wish to add or subtract nodes.  You can then alter the shape by dragging the nodes

Using the Common Aperture feature can save time.  There is a list of common sizes and you can draw your own and then add them to the list, using the ADD TO COMMON button.

The default sizes listed, takes into account the overlap or bleed of the image and makes the aperture smaller eg a 3 x 3" (76 x 76mm) takes approx .25" or 6mm off the finished image size to create an aperture approx 2.75 x 2.75" or 70 x 70mm square.

To flip, rotate, centre and align shapes, use the tools at the left.  Further positioning can be applied to each shape using the POSITION values at the right.  For example, if you wanted  three rectangles shapes to all be 50mm or 2" from the top of the mat, simply select all the shapes by grouping them with the shape tool or using the Shift key+left click and enter 50mm or 2" into the TOP value.  Similarly, by changing the BOTTOM, LEFT and RIGHT values will move the shapes around.

SAVING CUSTOM MATS

To the right of the drawing space, you will see MAT ID.  If you wish to keep the mat for use later on, you can give this mat a unique ID.  At the end of typing, you must hit the Enter key.  You can also add the mat to Favourites.

Favourites

Using this feature allows you to add your favourite mats of any type ie Standard, Custom or Panoramic to this folder.  The benefit is that each time you open that album type, the Favourites will appear.  In this way you can add or subtract mats that you use often, saving time searching for them in other categories.

To add a custom mat to Favourites, you can select the tab in the Custom Mat Editor or simply select the mat in the Mat Selector and right click.

Exporting Custom Mats

For each album type, you can save the custom mats you have created for later use, though with the Favourites folder, this is practically unecessary.

Go to Mat>Export Custom Mats.  A new screen will open.  Select a destination.  It would be a good idea to start a new folder for each album type e.g. Pro Bound Panorama Horizontal, Pro Bound Vogue etc. Save the mats to that folder.

Importing Custom Mats

To import the saved custom mats, go to Mat>Import Custom Mats and search for the folder where you stored the mats.  Select them and they will open to the Custom area of the Mat Selection.

Alignment

To align shapes, use the Alignment Tools at the left.  Further positioning can be applied to each shape using the Position values at the right.  For example, if you wanted the 3 rectangles shapes shown to the left to all be 50mm or 2" from the top of the mat, simply select all the shapes by grouping them with the shape tool or using the shift key+left click and enter 50mm or 2" into the Top value.  Similarly, by changing the bottom, left and right values will move the shapes around.

Editing Existing Mats:

To alter any existing mat. (even standard mats) First, click on the mat you wish to copy by selecting it from the drop down list in the mat selector.  Right click and select "Create Custom Copy Mat".  Go to Custom in the Mat Selector and you will see a copy here now.  Double click on the copy and the Custom Mat Editor will open with the copy displayed.

for more detail on the function of each tool, go to Custom Mats.

Adding PANOSPAN Mats:

To add a Panospan across 2 sides (3 or 4 sides if you have a flip page), go to the MAT>Create - either Panoramic 2, Panoramic 3 or Panoramic 4, depending on the number of pages you wish to span.  The Custom Mat Editor will open.

Select a shape from the Tools Box and simply draw the shape by dragging it across the page, exactly as you would for a regular custom mat.

Panospan's can be added to Favourites too.

Drag the finished Panospan onto the pages as normal.

NOTE:  using the Export feature, JAD will create separate images allowing for the split.

JAD DOES NOT CREATE ONE LARGE IMAGE.

Adding Pages: (see also Help Pages)

In the Album View, select the page where you want to insert the new page.  Go to the Tool Bar and select Page>Add page.

Deleting Pages: (see also Help Pages)

In the Album View, select the page you want to delete. Go to the Tool Bar and select Page>Delete page.

NOTE: As albums have an even number of pages, if you add or delete pages that would result in there being an uneven number of pages, JAD will automatically adjust by adding or subtracting pages at the end of the album.

Shuffling/Swapping Pages: (see also Help Pages)

Pages can be shuffled simply by selecting the side you want to move in Album View and dragging it to the side you want to swap with.

Flip Pages:

A maximum of 2 flip pages can be added to an album.

In the top right hand corner of each side is a small grey square.  Clicking on this will reveal another grey square with an arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the side.

Clicking on the arrow will reveal the "Open"  page, which will be named Side X a.  The "Closed" view shows Side X b.

Add mats and images as normal.

EDITING IMAGES

Rotating Images:

Once images have been selected and dragged into the page side, you may rotate the image in 90 degree steps.  Use the left or right  accordingly in the Control Panel.

Moving Images:

In the Image View Screen, click and drag the image to the desired position.  For fine adjustment,

the left, right, up and down arrows can also be used.

Zoom / Crop Images:

In the Control Panel, use the slider to zoom in on images.

HINT: The scale (dpi) will change as the image cropped.  This will give an indication of the image size at the preferred cropping.  Depending on the original image size, this will give an indication of the interpolation necessary e.g. if final output is to be at 300dpi and by zooming in the dpi scale changes to 150, it means that quite  a bit of interpolation will need to take place to get the image up to 300dpi.

Photo Borders

JAD can add embedded borders to the images, either individually or for the whole album.

This can create an interesting and "artsy"  look to your album.

CAUTION: Some printing processes will "stretch"  your images.  It may not seem like much, say 2%, but it is enough to throw out the registration of the cut outs and the photos.  Before embarking on this option, we strongly recommend that you do a test print first to make sure there is no "stretching" of the image.  This is not a JAD fault.

Individual Images :

Select the image you want to add the border to in Page View.

Go to Image> Image  properties>Borders>Enable Border.>Choose a colour>Enter Border Thickness (defaults to 6mm) >OK.

All Images :

Go to >Album>Album Properties>Pages / Mats>Photo Borders>Enable Borders>Choose Colour>OK>Choose Border Thickness>OK.

Modifying Images

You can use this function to make changes to images in your album design. This will open the original image file in your photo editor. If you don't want to edit the original it is recommended that you have a backup. An Image Modifier must be configured before you can use it.

Setting up the Image Modifier

Select File>Preferences> Image Editors  OR ->Modify Image->Configure... - this will open a list of available Image Modifiers. To create a new one, press the New button, to change or remove an existing one select it and press the edit or delete button.

To actually work, an Image Modifier must be set up to point to a programme on your computer. The required attributes are:

Name

The name which will appear in the menu.

Description

A description of this programme

Programme Command/Application

A command to execute this programme. If the command contains the % character then this will be substituted with the filename, otherwise the filename will be appended as a parameter. Macintosh users should select the application from the directory /Applications. If this fails then descend into this directory and locate a file which launches the editor. See example below for Photoshop or Mac.

Windows Example:

Name: Photoshop

Description: Photoshop 7

Programmeme Command:C:\Programme Files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0\Photoshp.exe

Macintosh Example:

Name: Photoshop

Description: Photoshop 7

Programmeme Command: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop 7/Adobe Photoshop 7.0

Note: Most applications can be linked using the .app path in /Applications. This example shows an exception.

Using Modify Image

JAD has two options for modifying your images.

The first option "Modify Image" , will open your image direct into Photoshop where you can edit and then select save and the image will be saved back into JAD with any modifications.

A warning will come up to warn that you are editing the original file.

The second option is to "Copy and Modify".  This is perhaps the beter option, as JAD will take a copy of the original and open a copy into Photoshop, where you can do your editing and then select save.  The advantage of this method, is that the original unedited file will remain in Photo Preview and the new edited version will automatically be imported.

There are a number of ways to select to modify your image

1. From the Photo Placement Window  at the bottom of the screen left mouse click (or Apple Key Click)

2. Go to the toolbar and select IMAGE>Modify Image

3. Right click on the image in either of Album View; Leaf View or Page View.

Previewing Design

Once you are satisfied with your album design, you have several choices for previewing your design:

  • Printing:  you can print a copy of your layout from Album>Print PROOF  You can choose the layout by changing the number of leaves in the next dialogue box.

  • Email:  If you have Adobe Acrobat Writer installed, you can follow the above steps, except you would select Acrobat as the printer.  Save the file to your JAD folder "Preview" (see page 6).  This can be sent as an attachment with an email.
  • If you do not have Acrobat Writer, you can get a free version of shareware software from

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

  • Slide Show:   JAD does not come with a slide show.  However, it will prepare the files for use in your favourite slide show. (Windows XP and MAC OSX ship with a slide show already installed) To create the files needed, go to:    Image>slide show .  Choose the destination directory. The DPI setting defaults to 72dpi.  You can change this if you wish.  The output quality defaults to Max. 16, however, you can select lower to make a smaller file, especially for emailing.

The files are now in the folder ready to be loaded into your slide show.  To access the Windows XP version, simply open the folder and select the first image.  Windows will them ask if you would like to see a slide show.  You could also drag them into iPhoto in MAC or your favourite slide show programme.

Ordering the Album:

So now you have planned your album, shown your clients the end result, made any final adjustments and now want to order the album - couldn't be easier.

First, make sure you are on-line with the internet.  Then Go to Order>Send Order, JAD will inform you if there are fields that haven't been filled out e.g.Page edge colour; mat colour or order details.

Once the order has been sent, you will get a confirmation email, provided your email details in the user section are correct.

If you ever need to check on the status of an album, please quote the file number beginning with JA -XXXXX-XXXX.jlb

Preparing Images for Printing (only available with FULL version)

This is probably the most powerful and time saving feature of all.  There are a couple of ways of doing this, the most popular being exporting the composite mat image, that will exactly match the mat we have cut for you.

HINT: As apart of your colour management, unless you colour corrected and adjusted all your images before you imported them to JAD, you probably should open each separate image into Photoshop and make sure you are happy with the quality.

Printing of Files for Pages with Mats (Composite Images):

Once you are happy with all your images:

- Go to ORDER>Export Images

- Select your destination directory - use the folder you created originally created called Prints

- Change  the DPI setting to that of the lab you will be using.  This is very important, because if you get this wrong, the prints may not print to the correct size.  Ring and ask your lab what setting you should be using.

- Select the Output Type*  -Print Composite Images for Mats

- Choose the output -  jpeg, tiff or png.

- Click OK

Your composite files of each page and the cover inlay photo if one has been chosen  will be saved in your designated folder into 2 file - one labelled with the size you set up for the export  and another with any pages that were oversized i.e. larger than the nominated export size.

This process may take a while..........

20-40mins would not be uncommon.  Remember, JAD is preparing high resolution files, to size just as laid out in the album design.

Album Assembly

Now the easy part. Once you get your album and mats back from Jorgensen Albums, the mats will all be exactly as you designed or chose in the order.  The composite prints will come back from the lab and will match exactly the overlay for the album (at most you may have to cut the print to suit the mat and allow enough tape to be exposed).

Your album assembler will love you!!

Individual Prints

All the steps are the same as for Co mposite prints above, except you select Individual Prints from the Output Type  (see page 19 above)

This will create individual files for each image on each page, which would then be taped to the back of the mats.

E and S Albums

Variously known as Coffee Table Albums, Magazine Albums or Flush Albums, these books are easy to create within JAD.

Choosing the album is exactly the same as for any of the other albums.

Pages only come in black or white and there is no option for edging or corners on the pages.

The BIG difference is in making up the pages as composite images.

You will need to have an idea of what you are trying to create.  As an example, we will describe how the print below was created using JAD.

Go to Mat>Create Custom Mat

The Custom Mat Editor will open.

Z Order

To create a layering effect, use the Z Order in the control panel to the right.

Background Images

However, we still need to fill in the background colour as white.

The way we suggest you do this is:

             Simple huh!
